Protecting Your Elderly Loved Ones From Nursing Home Abuse And Neglect

The decision to place an elderly relative in a nursing home or another elder care facility can be difficult for any family. To make matters worse, even some of the most apparently trustworthy facilities do not provide the kind of care that their residents deserve. There is nothing worse than seeing a loved one hurt or abused in some way.

Talk with attorney of Clements Law Firm if a loved one has suffered illnesses or injuries as a result of nursing home negligence or abuse. We protect clients throughout the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area who have suffered from negligence in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other similar organizations.

Signs Of Elder Abuse And Negligence

If an elder resident has suffered abuse or negligence, usually the signs are relatively easy to spot. Signs of abuse can include:

  • Decubitus ulcers: Decubitus ulcers, commonly called “pressure sores” or “bedsores,” are bruises around the legs and backside. Nursing home staff members know that they are supposed to move bedridden residents with some frequency. Only when they don’t move or rotate residents do these bedsores occur.
  • Malnutrition and dehydration: These are among the most common signs of neglect. There are strict regulations in place to make sure nursing home residents receive proper nutrition and hydration. However, due to lack of training, efforts to cut costs and other oversights, nursing homes often do not provide proper care for their residents.
  • Bruises, scraping and other physical injuries: Due to unsafe stairs, messy hallways and other common areas, many elderly residents suffer nursing home falls, which can cause serious injuries. Most commonly, evidence of bruising, scraping and other injuries can be a result of negligence.
  • Depression: Although depression and listlessness are not uncommon in nursing homes, they can be indicative of more serious problems like emotional abuse or neglect.
